HOW HYMENOPLASTY IS PERFORMED
INDICATIONS
Hymenoplasty is a surgical reconstruction in the area of the vaginal entrance with an emphasis on the restoration of the hymen. It is performed because of congenital obstruction, which makes insertion of tampons or sexual intercourse difficult and causes accumulation of menstrual blood. It may also be performed for religious or ritual reasons.
BEFORE SURGERY
Before surgery you will have a consultation with a plastic gynaecologist, who will evaluate the condition of the vagina and vaginal entrance and recommend an appropriate procedure. They will also explain how the hymenoplasty and subsequent recovery will proceed and what improvements can be expected from the procedure.
COURSE OF HYMENOPLASTY
In a hymenoplasty, the surgeon connects the individual segments of the damaged hymen, sutures the lining of the vaginal entrance, and thus recreates an incomplete barrier known as the hymen. The operation usually takes place under short-term general anaesthesia according to the extent of changes.
HEALING AFTER SURGERY
A patient may be discharged 2–4 hours after the procedure or as recommended by the doctor. After the procedure, we recommend avoiding strenuous physical exertion for about one week and sexual intercourse for about four weeks. Frequent rinsing of the perineum, such as by showering, is advisable.
